Motherboard: Asus M3A32-MVP Deluxe — 6xSATA, 1xPATA, 10xUSB, 2xFirewire, 1xGigabit-ethernet, 4 PCI-e slots, 2 oldfashioned PCI-slots, and a lot of strange audio connectors that I don't understand (but I did find a small plug that seems to output analog stereo sound, so everything is fine). This motherboard also has one floppy connector and one PS/2 port for some obscure reason, but no bluetooth, no serial ports, and no parallel port.
-
CPU: Phenom X4 9550 — four 2.2GHz cores, 4x128kB L1 cache, 4x512kB L2 cache, and one shared 2MB L3 cache.
-
Box: Antec Sonata III, bundled with a 500W power supply. Can be used as a mirror if you hang it on a wall and shine a bright lamp on yourself. Also has an eSATA connector on the front. The motherboard supplies another eSATA on the back.
-
RAM: 2x2GB Kingston 800MHz ECC (KVR800D2E5K2/4G). The motherboard BIOS can be configured to do memory scrubbing when ECC is enabled, so I do this of course.
-
Graphics card: Asus GeForce 6200LE PCI-e (interim card until
my Sapphire Radeon HD3850 arrives — dual DVI @ 2560x1600 pixels, HDTV output, fanless operation).
-
Optical drive: Toshiba/Samsung (TSSTcorp) SH-S202J. Nothing special here. No Blu-ray.
-
Disk: Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 500GB (ST3500320AS) — Seagate has been my favourite during the past 10+ years. They tend to run slightly hot, but they are extremely silent and reliable. A deciding factor for me was that this model has only two platters.
-
Another Gigabit-ethernet interface: Intel PRO/1000 PT Desktop PCI-e card.
-
Another disk: Samsung Spinpoint F1 750GB (HD753LJ) — This disk is actually destined for another box, but I have it temporarily installed in the new Antec cabinet. I have very little experience with Samsung disks, but I have used this model in external enclosures before, and it has been very quiet and cool.
